The Origin of Mother's Day

The tradition of honoring mothers on a special day is very old, but the Mother's Day we celebrate today has its origin only about a hundred years ago. It was begun by an American woman named Anna M. Jarvis. After her own mother's death in 1907, she persuaded business and government leaders to creat a special day on which to honor mothers. On May 10, 1908, Anna Jarvis held a  church service to honor her mother. Some people regard this as this as the first Mother's Day. Durning the service, she gave out carnations --- her mother's favorite flower. The carnation has become the flower of Mother's Day. In 1914, Mother's Day became an official holiday in the United States (held on the second Sunday in May), and , by then, People in many other countries were also celebrating this new festival. Today, Mother's Day is celebrated around the world.
